Telling the remarkable story of Martin and Osa Johnson, photographers, explorers, naturalists, authors ... and native Kansans.

Program details and availability

The Martin and Osa Johnson Safari Museum is located in Osa's hometown of Chanute, Kansas...Formed in 1961 to preserve the Johnsons' achievements and to encourage further research into their fields of study, the Safari Museum (as it was originally named) has grown and flourished.

Over the years a number of related collections have developed to broaden the museum's ability to achieve its mission to "collect, preserve, and make available the life work of Martin and Osa Johnson, while continuing their work of sharing the knowledge of natural history and cultural anthropology with the global community."

Class trips and tours of the Museum are conducted by our professional staff upon request during the Museum's business hours.

The museum consists of four main touring areas including the Johnson Exhibition and the Selsor Gallery on the second floor and the Imperato African Gallery and the 30-seat Snark Theater on the first floor.

The museum is the main center for the collection and distribution of information concerning the lives and accomplishments of Martin and Osa Johnson...Access to Johnson materials and the various collections as well as the museum's Henshall Archives can be granted to researchers.

The entrance to the Museum's 30 seat Snark Theater, named after the three travelogue theaters Martin opened after he returned to Southeast Kansas, is just left of the Snark sign...In this theater visitors can watch a wide selection of the Johnsons' documentary films; and programs about Martin and Osa produced all over the world.

There are two main galleries, one presenting the Johnsons' story and another of African ethnographic exhibits...Additionally, a smaller temporary display space features traveling and changing exhibits.

The museum includes a shop offering Johnson books and video copies of their movies...The Museum Shop also carries a selection of ethnic items from Africa and other parts of the world.

The museum has garnered state and national awards and has been named the No. 1 Museum in Kansas.
